On the Air: Dr. Uday Jani Provides Advice on Avoiding Heat Exhaustion

On a recent segment on WMDT-TV, Dr. Uday Jani offered expert advice to community viewers on how to avoid heat exhaustion, the #1 heat-related illness he sees in his older patients. “Seniors are more prone to heat exhaustion because of underlying medical conditions,” he said.  Dr. Jani explained that some of the medications taken for congestive heart failure or high blood pressure can pre-dispose seniors to become dehydrated, which can cause serious problems when coupled with exposure to heat. “The biggest mistake people can make is not drinking enough water even when they’re not thirsty. A good rule of thumb is to drink at least one to two glasses of water every half hour,” he said.
